A great swimsuit deserves an inspiring name. For our Coral Collection we wanted to honour four empowering women from history who have blazed a trail and continue to influence how we live today. Meet Marie.
THE TRAIL BLAZER
Born 1916 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Marie Vieux-Chauvet was a novelist, playwright and poet whose works explored race, class, colour and gender. Although she lived during the brutal and violent dictatorship of Francois Duvalier, Marie was an outspoken political voice. In 1968 she wrote what is consider her most important work – 'Amour, Colère et Folie’ (Love, Anger and Madness), a devastating critique of Duvalier’s regime. After it received endorsement from influential feminist, Simone de Beauvoir, ‘Amour, Colère et Folie’ was published by the prestigious publishing house, Gallimard, in Paris. However, fearful of the consequences of Marie’s book, her husband convinced her to buy every copy and destroy them, vowing to never publish the work again. Marie divorced her husband and moved to New York, where she continued to write novels. She died in 1973, two years after Duvalier, whose reign of torture and oppression was succeeded by his son. (His son was driven out of Haiti in 1963 following an uprising). ’Amour, Colère et Folie’ was republished in 2005 and is widely considered one of this century’s most remarkable literary events.
